Thursday 6th September, featuring:

Tenzin Choegyal

Acclaimed Tibetan Singer-Songwriter. 

Tenzin was born to a nomadic family in Tibet,

escaped as a small child into Nepal from the Chinese occupation and was raised in a Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala, India.

 

Since his Australian debut in 1997, Tenzin has toured the globe and become a major force on the world music scene.

 

While his mastery of traditional Tibetan instruments is well known, Tenzin’s voice is most memorable in its intensity and poignancy.

sangeet Mishra

8th Generation Sarangi Master.

Coming from a long line of sarangi masters, Sangeet was considered by his seniors and gurus to be a child prodigy. 

 

A highly versatile performer, Sangeet has collaborated worldwide with musicians from various genres and styles to create a new musical language.

Leading Tabla Player.

Shen is one of Australia's leading tabla players, best known for his beautiful sound and supportive accompaniment and is highly regarded in the thriving Indian classical music scene.

 

He thoroughly enjoys bringing people together through music, whether playing with his many young students or collaborating with top musicians from around the world.

 
 

the MASTERCLASS

Indian Classical Ragas & Taals:

Delve into the melodies and rhythms of Indian classical music with master musicians Sangeet & Shen.

During this unique one-off master class, Sangeet Mishra will lead the group in exploring a Raga (a melodic framework for improvisation), including exercises, compositions, and insights into improvisation.
 

Shen Flindell will introduce several Taals (one of the two foundational elements of Indian music) and explain how to hear and follow the Taal while listening to a performance. He’ll also cover counting up to 16 beats on one hand while vocalising tabla rhythms; an essential skill for playing tabla.

 

Finally the duo will give a guided demonstration of aspects of an Indian classical performance. 

 

This master class is for intermediate to advanced players

What you'll get:

  • Knowledge of the scale notes of a Raga

  • How to sing and play a composition in that Raga

  • Knowledge of aspects of other Ragas, as well as contrasting Ragas

  • How to count and vocalise Indian Taals

  • You’ll understand and be able to follow the structure of Indian classical music

What to bring:

  • Just you.

  • Optional: if you play an instrument, feel free to bring it (it’s recommended that instruments are able to play altered scales from D)

About the teachers:

Shen Flindell studied tabla under Pt. Kaviraj Ashutosh Bhattacharya,

a great tabla master of the Benares Gharana in India.
 

Now one of Australia's leading tabla players Shen is highly regarded

within the realm of Indian classical music. He thoroughly enjoys bringing people together through music, whether playing with his many young students or collaborating with top musicians from around the world.

 

Sangeet Mishra comes from a long line of sarangi (Indian bowed string instrument) masters in Varanasi and was considered by his seniors and gurus to be a child prodigy.

Now Sangeet maintains a busy schedule as a professional musician

and has performed with leading international artists, in movies & prestigious festivals in both India and around the world.
